We all know that it’s not all rosy serving the Lord because even roses have thorns. It was never easy for the people of old and we shouldn’t expect it to be any better. And Jesus said that towards the end of days, perilous times will come. He never said He would take the hard times away but He promised to be with us till the end of time.
But why do some ministers or believers give up along the way?
1Samuel 30 :1- 6 says, “…And David was greatly distressed, for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters. But David ENCOURAGED HIMSELF IN THE LORD HIS GOD.”
David and his men returned home only to find out that all that they had had been taken away including their wives, sons and daughters. Few minutes ago, he was a leader. But now, they don’t see him as one and they are just planning to stone him to death. David knew he had the calling of God upon his life but everything unfolding at that time didn’t seem to be pointing to that fact again and his life was at stake. But the bible said that “DAVID ENCOURAGED HIMSELF IN THE LORD HIS GOD”.
Now, this encouragement didn’t come from the Lord towards him neither did it come from his fellow men but that it came within David himself. At this time it was like all had abandoned him.
Yet he strengthened himself; he motivated himself; he encouraged himself but not IN his strength or wisdom, not IN the strength of his army, but IN THE LORD HIS GOD, even when God seemed to be silent in the situation.
There are moments in our journey with the Lord that the table may turn upside down. And if you are waiting for the Lord to encourage you or the people around you to motivate you, brothers and sisters, you will wait in vain. There are some situations where encouragement comes from the Lord, there are other situations where encouragement comes from the people around you. But the greatest motivation; the greatest strengthening; the greatest encouragement is within your self.
That’s why the bible says, “If you are weak in the days of battle, then YOUR STRENGTH IS SMALL…”(Proverbs 24:10)
When the chips are down, when the table is upside down, when there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel, and the Lord is silent. He wants to measure the level of strength you have built within yourself based on your knowledge of him and watch you put it to use.
1: To encourage yourself IN THE LORD YOUR GOD is to REMIND YOURSELF of the WORD OF GOD OVER THE SITUATIONS (Hebrews 4:12, Joshua 1:6)
2: To encourage yourself IN THE LORD YOUR GOD is to REMIND YOURSELF of the MERCIES OF GOD OVER YOUR LIFE WHICH HAS KEPT YOU TILL DATE (Lamentation 3:22)
3: To encourage yourself IN THE LORD YOUR GOD is to REMIND YOURSELF of the BLESSINGS OF GOD OVER YOUR LIFE AND FAMILY AND MINISTRY (Genesis 22:17)
4: To encourage yourself IN THE LORD YOUR GOD is to REMIND YOURSELF of the PROMISES OF GOD OVER YOUR LIFE AND FAMILY AND MINISTRY. He said, ” I never called the seed of Jacob to serve me in vain” (Isaiah 45:19)
5: To encourage yourself IN THE LORD YOUR GOD is to REMIND YOURSELF of the PRESENCE OF GOD OVER YOUR LIFE, FAMILY AND MINISTRY. He said, I will never leave you nor forsaken you ( Hebrews 13:5) I will be with you till the end of time (Matthew 28:20) He never said goodbye.
6: To encourage yourself IN THE LORD YOUR GOD is to REMIND YOURSELF of the LOVE OF GOD OVER YOUR LIFE AND FAMILY AND MINISTRY. He said, I have loved thee with an everlasting love…(Jeremiah 31:3)
7: To encourage yourself IN THE LORD YOUR GOD is to REMIND YOURSELF of the GOODNESS OF GOD OVER YOUR LIFE AND FAMILY AND MINISTRY.
8: To encourage yourself IN THE LORD YOUR GOD is to REMIND YOURSELF of the THOUGHT HE THINKS TOWARDS YOU, YOUR FAMILY AND MINISTRY. His thought is to bring you to an EXPECTED END (Jeremiah 29:11) He never thinks evil of you.
Jeremiah – The crying Prophet- cried saying, ” Lord you have deceived me…”(Jeremiah 20:7) Because what he was seeing was not what he expected as a Man-of-GOD. He wanted to give up but the WORD OF GOD would not stop coming to him and burning within him like fire (Jeremiah 20:9) because the Lord knew the THOUGHT HE THINKS TOWARDS him, the THOUGHT of GOOD and not of evil and to bring him to an EXPECTED END.
These things enumerated above do not come from the Lord nor from the people around you but from you. It’s your responsibility.
The reason why most ministers give up is that most of us fail TO ENCOURAGE OURSELVES IN THE LORD WHO CALLED US. They fail to show their CHALLENGES that they have a God before whom NOTHING is difficult or impossible (Jeremiah 32:27)
Self encouragement is a powerful tool that keeps one moving even in the face of challenges. Even when no body notices your needs or assisting you financially because, the major challenge ministers of God face is financial challenges. Self encouragement brings down the Goliath of your calling with the first stone without wasting the other ones. Self encouragement or motivation gives you victory even before the victory comes.
And what drives us is the salvation of the souls the Lord has committed to our ministry- the ministry He called us into – that none should be lost.
Encourage yourself in the order of David that you may lead your followers to victory over sin, death and destruction in Yeshua’s name, AMEN.
God bless you.
