I need you to view yourself standing before a mirror. Should someone ask you what part of your body is the deadliest, what part would that be?
Though it is hidden in another member of the body, when it comes out or when put to use, it has that tendency to sustain your life or to destroy it; it can set a city on fire or calm revolting masses; it can imprison you or set you free; it can cause a war or prevent a war; it tears relationships apart but can mend a broken one; it can mend a broken heart but can also brake a heart; its works are directly opposite to each other and it gives the impression whether people should perceive you in good light or in bad light.
Yet, while standing before a mirror, you will not see it but it functions every day, every minute, every seconds.
It’s the tongue! Small member but deadly.
Those who have not used it wisely have ended up in the grave but those who used it wisely are sitting before kings.
The bible says that life and death are in the power of the tongue and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
James 3 vs. 1-12
James said we should not all be teachers because our judgment will be stricter but one who can control his tongue is perfect and is also able to control his whole body.
So control over your tongue can also mean control over your entire being.
James, did you say the tongue is a fire? Then there is a problem!
Fire is a good servant but a bad master.
If fire is your servant, you can use it to cook, you can burn things that are no longer useful to you, you refine gold with it.
But when fire is your master, it can raise a whole building down, your important documents are gone, your properties are in flames, your farmland will burn and if you dare it, it will consume you also. Now it is out of control.
What did the tongue do to James?
Cause it seems like he doesn’t have anything good to say about it?
The tongue has torn his congregation apart. Those who are supposed to handle some offices had been stopped because of gossip. And those already handling some offices had been pulled down because of lies. New converts couldn’t continue because of what others are saying about them. Families had been torn apart because of careless words. Doesn’t it show up where you worship now?
Amongst the 7 things God hates and that are abominations to the Lord, a lying tongue is the second. (Prov. 6:16)
The Lord whom we serve does not talk much; He doesn’t suffer diarrhea in His mouth; He says what He means and means what He says.
He expects us not to be careless with our words because He knows the authority that comes with every spoken word. Everything in existence came to be through the activities of the tongue – the words spoken by God.
And Jesus Christ warned us saying that we would be judged for every careless words we speak (Matthew 12:36)
Why did He call it careless or idle? This is because every word must have a task to perform wherever it’s spoken, if not, then you should hold it back.
Your words should be a light to one in darkness; if not, then it should broker peace in a home or among people who are at war; if not, then a man/woman on sick-bed should hear your words and life would spring within him/her; if not, then a discouraged person should hear words of encouragement from you; if not, then your words should discipline; should correct; should direct in good paths; should instruct; should scold in love; should teach; should guide; should promote peace and love; should…etc
That is what God expects from us because He said we are gods so as His words creates ours should create, as His words builds, ours should build also. He doesn’t use words carelessly so we should not as well because there’s power in spoken words.
And once spoken, you can’t take it back.
God bless you.
