Forgiveness, according to the Bible, is correctly understood as God’s promise not to count our sins against us.
Biblical forgiveness requires repentance on our part (turning away from our old life of sin) and faith in Jesus Christ.

Psychologists generally defined forgiveness as a conscious, deliberate decision to release feelings of resentment or vengeance toward a person or group of persons who harmed you, regardless of whether they actually deserve your forgiveness or not.

A deeper view into this word forgiveness, shows that there’s a mystery behind it. Jesus Christ knew it quite well that’s why he said that our act of forgiveness should outlive our life span. To forgive 70 x 7 times shows that it’s impossible for one to offend another 490 times since we have only but a hundred years to live. It simply means that just as we breath in and out, just as we sleep and wake up, we should also have that spirit to readily forgive.

For Jesus Christ to be emphasizing on the need to forgive one another calls for sober reflection. Why was he keen on it? It’s a great mystery only the Holy Spirit can give us understanding into.
God has a nature which we understand. God’s nature compromise of love, light, merciful, kindness, long-suffering, compassionate etc and of course forgiveness.
This particular nature of God -forgiveness – is one that every true believer should strive to possess. It opens us up to a deeper knowledge of God and his powers are readily available to one that possesses this particular attribute of God.

We all need forgiveness for in many ways we offend all and ourselves. We need forgiveness from God, we need forgiveness from others and in most cases we need to forgive ourselves.
Some people are offended in themselves for failing to do something or to actualise a goal when the opportunity presented itself. Some are offended in God and find it difficult to forgive themselves or God because he allowed some things to happen to them or come their way even when they prayed against it.

Now, how is the power of forgiveness a mystery?

1. Your sins are forgiven only when you forgive the one that offended you (Matthew 6:12,14-15)
When you realize that you can only be forgiven by God when you forgive another; when you know that to obtain mercy from God, you have to show mercy then you find out that it is all up to you. You will do unto others what you will have God do unto you.
The speed at which you receive forgiveness from God is dependent on how you readily forgive once you are offended, “…forgive us our sins AS we forgive those who trespass against us… ” Emphasis is on the word “AS”. Exactly the way I do it to another, do it unto me.

Forgive that your sins be forgiven. Hold on to the offense of others against you and God holds your own against you. Forgive the one that offended you and you will be forgiven. So he who doesn’t forgive is actually against himself. You are actually holding yourself when you won’t forgive.
The doctrine of forgiveness is taken lightly and in some cases not considered at all. But if you understand the mystery of the power of forgiveness, you will cherish it all the days of your life.

2. Some secrets of God can never be made available to you.
In Acts 7:55-60, Stephen saw heaven and was the only one that knew what was happening in heaven at that time that he was being falsely accused. This is because, he had been fashioned into the nature of his Lord and Master, Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ readily forgives even at the point of death while he was being crucified. Stephen, keyed into that nature of Christ and it became part of him.

A forgiving heart is a pure heart and only the pure in heart shall see God (Matthew 5:8) Only the pure in heart possesses the power to know the secret events going on in heaven. Many times Jesus said, “I do the things I see my Father do…” Yet he was on earth then. On two occasions, Moses was summoned to commune with God for forty days and forty nights and God would come to the tent and request to have a meeting with Moses. Why? Because Moses had a forgiving heart. He asked God to kill him instead if God would not overlook the wrongs of the people of Israel (Exodus 32:32) A pure heart, a forgiving heart, only such and one can see God and be opened to the secret oracles of his presence.

3. Some dimensions of God’s power can never be open or accessed by you.
God’s power and manifestations come in many different dimensions. The level of authority you wield in God’s work is a function of the dimensions of God’s powers made available to you. You obtain such dimensions depending on your purity from sin, obedience and the nature of God you have attained (Romans 8:29) Forgiveness is a key nature here, “…conforming us to the image of his Son,… ”

4. One of the criteria to be called a child of God is if you have the spirit of forgiveness.
If you understand the mystery of the power of forgiveness, you will readily forgive and accept to be at fault even when you are right for peace to reign. Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God (Matthew 5:9)
Forgive seventy times seven. I wonder how long an individual will live on earth to be offended that much. The mystery of forgiveness outlives everyone. You can never exhaust the opportunity of forgiving others which is made available to you in your life time.
Forginess is a powerful key that unlocks the heart of God to one who possesses it.

5 Forgiveness make your prayers and gift and tithes and offerings readily acceptable before God.
It says, “If you have any issues between you and another person, don’t offer anything to God because it will not be accepted by God”(Matthew 5:24)
Do you know how many wasted offerings, gifts, tithes and prayers that has been offered to God which He never accepted? Loads of them! It would have been better if you never offered it. It would have been better if you never prayed or praised or worshipped God again until you forgive the one that offended you or seeked forgiveness from the one you offended. It is both a physical and spiritual blockade to opportunities of blessings and breakthroughs. When you don’t forgive, it’s not the other person that suffers it, it’s you! You cage yourself in malice, pains, grudges and you appear like that to offer unto God!? Drop that load of bondage of unforgiving spirit and be free.

6. Forgiveness makes you to be like God. It makes you godlike. One of the most important nature of God is forgiveness. All through the scriptures, he has always made it known to us, “It’s by my mercy that you sons of Jacob are not consumed.” John and Jesus Christ started their ministry with the message of reconciliation.

Reconciliation is never possible unless one party has decided to forgive or overlook the wrongs of the other in the interest of peace and love. That’s God. God’s nature is peaceful, loving, forgiving – among many others. Show me one who forgives and I will show you a godlike person. Show me one who forgives and I will show you a peaceful and loving person. That’s Christlike, that’s godly, that’s God’s nature.

7. Nothing will ever be difficult or inassessible to a man who forgives. He will readily find favour between God and man. You will never want to be in the company of one who bears grudges and keeps malice. Many opportunities, blessings and connections can be hindered in that kind of environment or atmosphere. It’s a bad spirit, it’s a bad energy.

I pray for us, that every power that has bound us to the unforgiving spirit, let that power disappear in Jesus Christ name Amen. I disconnect myself from unforgiving spirit. Offenses in my heart disappear in Jesus Christ name Amen. Creat a pure heart in me Oh Lord of glory, that I may behold your presence always for the rest of my life in Jesus Christ name Amen.

God bless you.

I am carefully and wonderfully made.
